Look at the stars and planets this Saturday Sept. 28th at 7 p.m. with the last Star Train, hosted by the Dark Rangers of Great Basin National Park. Explore the night sky during this fascinating evening - educationally entertaining for both children and adults!

Labor Day Weekend At The Railway!

Hello everyone! Here we are on a wonderfully clear, smoke-free Friday afternoon in Ely, a good thing because we are getting ready for our annual Plein Air Outdoor Arts Festival. Plein air artists paint landscapes in open air and unlike many places unfortunately socked in by smoke, we’re quite the opposite and a great choice for a last minute Labor Day weekend plan. I can tell you this event inspires me as it does those folks who come to create, as well as those who come to watch. This event helps capture the beauty and history of our Railroad in each artist’s unique way. Picture our authentic steam locomotives and vintage trains set against Ely’s beautiful mountains, meadows and blue skies. I guess this is why our plein air artists love this place…we offer a beautiful canvas! We hope you all can come out and enjoy the weekend with us.

The Railway Is NOW Blogging!

A national landmark 19^th century historic Railway in Ely Nevada has an Executive Director who is now blogging?! Yes! I want to share an insider’s view of this truly marvelous cultural heritage called Nevada Northern Railway. I’m Mark Bassett and when I first started volunteering here at the Railway, I quickly came to understand its rarity and national significance. Now as the Executive Director, I look for the best ways to share my insights and knowledge with you, hence my blog! 

I know blogs are high tech but here at Nevada Northern Railway, it’s amazing to see 19^th and 21^st technology merging together. Century old steam locomotives using GPS speedometers powered by a century old steam-powered dynamo, is just one example of the combination of old and new.

   

Another huge 19^th century vs. 21^st Century dichotomy is training 21^st century young adults in 19^th century technology. Our mission at the Railway is to not just to preserve the equipment and buildings but perhaps more importantly, it’s about teaching the current generation the skills necessary to maintain our equipment that is more than a century old. This is another reason for my Blog…awareness for developing this skill set is very important, not only to the Nevada Northern but also to the heritage industry.

As the most authentic standard gauge railroad left in America, we continue to receive top recognition and awards. I attribute this to the outstanding dedication of our staff and volunteers. Travelers to the area just rated us Best Place to Take the Kids in Rural Nevada for the 7th consecutive year and we also are the Best Rural Museum in 2013 (3^rd time winner). Proudly, our Polar Express train experience is the Best Event in Rural Nevada for 2013!
